The Beatles is lovingly referred to as the white album; this is because it was released with a plain white cover with raised ‘the Beatles’ white print. This was the Beatles first release on their three month old Apple label. It was however not the first release of Beatles material on Apple records, this honour belonged to ‘hey Jude/ Revolution.

The album itself seems to be more inspired by their earlier Revolver album than of their previous psychedelic Sgt. Pepper release. The vast majority of the thirty Beatles tunes that appeared on the white album were written during their stay in India with the Maharishi Mahesh in 1968. The album is very varied with tracks ranging from standard rock and roll such as revolution 1 to ballads such as blackbird; the Beatles contains many great tracks such as while my guitar gently weeps and I will.

Whilst recording the album the Beatles were becoming increasingly disillusioned both with each other and with the whole music industry. Many of the tracks were recorded without other members of the Beatles being present, in the case of while my guitar gently weeps, George Harrison recruited the help of Eric Clapton as he thought that the song would never get completed otherwise.

Although the Beatles CD was white on the outside it did include some nice goodies within the sleeve; these being four colour pictures of the Beatles and a collage poster that included the lyrics of all of the songs on the back of it.
