This was the Beatles first album on the Parlophone label; they had previously released material with tony Sheridan in Germany. It comprised of their two singles (Love me do; Please Please me) and ten new songs, four of which were written by the beatles, or more specifically Lennon and McCartney. The songs that they did not write were ones that they often played at their concerts at the Star Club in Hamburg and at the Cavern in their native Liverpool.
The album was named Please Please Me at the insistance of EMI, who were not confident that the Beatles were going to last as a group and wanted to capitalize on the success of the then number one single of the same name. Initially the Beatles producer George Martin wanted to record a live album at the cavern, but this was impractical so he took the band to the studio and tried to recreate the raw energy of the Beatles on the record.
To record the ten new songs for the please please me album took just thirteen hours! from ten in the morning to eleven at night on the 11th of Feburary 1963. The overall cost was 400 pounds.
EMI wanted to release a further single from the album, but the Beatles thought that this was being greedy so quickly returned to the studio to record the single 'from me to you' and its B side 'Thank you Girl'. At this point in time the Beatles, being prolific writers already had Lyrics for over a hundred songs.
