Beatles Album: With the beatles: Track 3
Year: 1963
Lyrics: Lennon and McCartney
Length: 2.04
The lyrics of all my loving were thought up by Paul as he was having a shave! He then went through his normal daily routine and composed the music to the Beatles song later that evening. In this respect it is an interesting song as it was the first song that he had ever written where he had the lyrics before the music.
This song was written when the Beatles were away on tour and as such it displays the different personalities of Paul and John; while McCartney writes about how good things will be when they meet up again, Lennon tended to write about the sorrow and loneliness of being apart. This is one of the few Paul songs that john gave open praise for and he called it “a damn good piece of work”.
The lyrics to the Beatles all my loving song themselves are inspired (like many future songs were to be) by Paul’s relationship with Jane Asher, who previously had been quoted as saying in an interview about the Beatles “now these I could scream for”. She went on to have a five year relationship with Paul and has been an inspiration for many of the McCartney’s love songs. That said the lyrics of this song can be looked on two ways ‘I’ll pretend that I’m kissing the lips that I’m missing’ does this mean he’s imaging being with Jane or does it mean that he’s thinking of her when he’s kissing someone else?
All my loving was the first song that the Beatles played on the Ed Sullivan show, and marked the introduction of the Beatles to the American public.
Paul double tracks his voice on this song and George plays a country and western guitar solo in the middle that seems to blend into the song perfectly.
