Beatles Album: Beatles for Sale : Track 3
Lyrics: Lennon and McCartney
The Baby’s in Black lyrics were a joint effort from the start by John Lennon and Paul McCartney, this was the first time that the pair had sat down and wrote a song together from start to finish since I want to hold your hand over a year previously. By this stage in their career the Beatles main creative writing force were generally writing their own songs, and getting their partner to help out with awkward lyrics or difficult middle eight sections of records.
The lyrics of the baby’s in black song are quite morbid in that they speak of a boy who is longing for a girl, but the girl does not see him because she is so in love with a boy who has left her and is not coming back, this makes her feel blue and hence she dresses in Black.
As with the writing of the lyrics, Paul and John shared the singing on Baby’s in Black. The subject of the blackness of failed or relinquished love is thought to have inspired the Rolling Stones on their track Paint it black song.

Paul McCartney: Lead vocals, Bass guitar.
